It is mid-September, 2001. The country is reeling from the impacts of the terrorist attacks on September 11th. Fear and suspicion are palpable, anti-Muslim sentiment is growing rapidly, and the country is bracing for war, although the exact theater remains uncertain. In this overwhelming shadow, the Ludkin family prepares for the Jewish New Year at their home in rural Vermont. The family is understandably shaken, from young Anna, who has known prejudice but never violence, to her grandmother Leah, who is a Holocaust survivor.
Enter 16-year-old Jamal, a classmate who is gathering information for his school project, a website that looks at intolerance on a personal and global level. Jamal is eager to interview Anna’s grandmother, to get her first-hand perspective, but Anna is protective of Leah. As Jamal becomes closer to both Anna and Leah, he begins to suspect something at once shocking and hopeful: He’s convinced that Leah is none other than Anne Frank, who — he believes — has survived the atrocities of the concentration camp, and is living a quiet and anonymous life in Vermont.
While Jamal strives to uncover more evidence to reveal the truth, he and Anna struggle with their own budding relationship. Historical accounts, Holocaust flashbacks, and issues of human intolerance in the age of 9/11 are intertwined in this complex, beautiful coming-of-age story.
