The Chosen immerses its audience in the lives of two boys, two fathers, and two distinct Jewish communities, “five blocks and a world apart.” Set against the backdrop of World War II, the revelation of the Holocaust, and the founding of the State of Israel, the play is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Its issues of Jewish identity transcend time, and difficult themes are interspersed with universally humorous moments.
Professionally directed by Mark Alan Gordon, this staged reading used minimal set, props, and music to great effect, drawing the audience in and painting complete scenes without the use of complicated theatrics. Our cast featured Matthew Winston, G. Richard Ames, Jason Lorber, Adam Joselson, Charlie Yarwood, and Bruce Chalmer.

The Chosen was adapted to the stage by Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok, based on Mr. Potok’s award-winning novel of the same name.
Theatre Kavanah’s staged reading in September 2013 in Burlington, Vermont marked our debut. Enthusiastically met by audiences, we took the The Chosen on the road in March 2013 to the Middlebury Town Hall Theater, Jewish Community of Greater Stowe, and Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in support of the Lost Shul Mural.
